BASE CUTTING APPARATUS HAVING CUTTING WHEEL AND METHOD OF IMPLEMENTING BUTT BONDING

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base cutting apparatus having a heating cutting wheel with two rectangular cut end portions having as high viscosity as possible, and a method of implementing butt joints. SOLUTION: A rotatable cutting wheel is used for heating a base of a polymer when cutting the base. The cutting wheel has a heater and a thermocouple which cooperate therewith and which are used for heating the cutting wheel and controlling its temperature. Heat softens the base to facilitate cutting and reduce distortion caused by the cutting. Clean cutting is further desirable when the base is made from a reinforced polymer. The method includes a process for heating the cutting wheel and a process for causing the heated cutting wheel to traverse the base.
