The spacing control for motor vehicles has detectors (16a,b) to monitor a section of the road and a computer to determine if a first vehicle is in the section of road at the time a second vehicle (24) is being monitored on the same section. The control also has sensors to identify the second vehicle. The detectors can be mounted adjacent to the section of roadway and have a defined mutual spacing.
