PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carbon material by which the surface area of the carbon material can be arbitrarily controlled. SOLUTION: A low molecular weight material giving a thermosetting resin is converted to a high molecular weight material under coexistence of an additive inert to the conversion reaction, the additive is removed at <=500 deg.C and the high molecular weight material is carbonized at >500 deg.C.
