PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform an accurate recording/reproducing operation in a narrow track pitch. SOLUTION: In a recording operation on a magnetic tape 2, reproducing is carried out by a detecting magnetic head 332 in an adjacent track on the traveling direction side of a magnetic tape 2, which is partially overwritten by a latest track recorded by a recording magnetic head 331. A magnetic head movement control means 13 moves a magnetic head part 33 in a track width direction according to the output level of the reproducing signal, and controls the driving of a magnetic head moving means 12 so as to keep constant the width of the adjacent track. Also, when the output level drops below a specified value, a signal output control means 14 controls a recording signal output means 11 such that a recording signal recorded on the adjacent track is outputted again to the recording magnetic head 331 in the recording of another track.
