PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for automatically dividing the back of slaughtered body and a method for automatically dividing the back of slaughtered body by which sure spinal column-splitting treatment can be hygienically carried out by correctly and automatically moving a saw along center line of the spinal column of slaughtered body. SOLUTION: This apparatus for automatically dividing the back of slaughtered body forms image of a slaughtered body 90 which is finished of pretreatment including peeling of skin by a saw action controlling part 70 from an ultrasonic wave sensor 71 closely attached to the back of the body and from a reflected wave of ultrasonic wave propagated to spinal column part of the body 90 in a hanging down state in which both rear feet are each connected to a hook trolley 83 and detects the center line of spinal column by the analysis and controls a the back-splitting mechanism part 20 in cooperation with the detected result and cuts the slaughtered body 90 correctly along the center line of spinal column by lowering the saw along a strut 11 while moving the saw to right and left directions along the center line of spinal column and automatically carries out the back-dividing operation.
