The gearbox (2) has first and second pulley sets (10,12) and a belt arrangement for transferring torque between the pulley sets, a hydraulic system (38) that can load at least one pulley set and that has a pump at least partly driven by the energy in the drive train. The belt arrangement can vary the flow of drive energy to the pump. Independent claims are also included for the following: an electronic controller for controlling the energy supply to a pump drive for a hydraulic system, a method of controlling a continuous transmission gearbox and an electronic controller for implementing the method.
