PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve performance by avoiding the variation of the behavior of a fuel injected from a fuel injection valve toward the inside of a cavity, in a direct injection type internal combustion engine composed by mounting the fuel injection valve 10 to a cylinder head 3 so as to face its tip part having a nozzle hole to the inside of a cylinder at a position adjacent to the inside surface of the cylinder 2, and by independently forming a raised part 13 on the inner bottom face of the cavity 12 hollowly formed on the top face of a piston 11 in the cylinder. SOLUTION: A flat surface 14 for firstly bringing the injected fuel from the fuel injection valve 10 in contact with it is so formed at the top part of the raised part 13 as to extend in the injected direction of the fuel from the fuel injection valve when being viewed from an axial direction 2a of the cylinder.
