An inflator, which is reduced in size and weight without lowering the performance, has a housing charged with CO2. With CO2, the charging density can be increased, so that the housing (12) can be made small-sized. Since a combustion means is also used, there is no possibility of the maximum pressure dropping during actuation. Further, an inflator is also provided which is capable of inflating a curtain-like airbag without being influenced by a change in the surrounding temperature. The curtain-like inflator has an inflator housing charged with a pressurized medium consisting of an inert gas with a sound velocity of 400 m/sec or above, so that the curtain-like airbag can be instantaneously opened even in lower than normal temperature atmospheres. Further, a curtain-like inflator, which is easy to produce, uses a one-end closed pipe as an inflator housing. Thus, the manufacturing process can be simplified as compared with a type using a single plate member.
