A water collection device (100) has a spike portion (104) and a tapered cup portion (102), wherein the spike portion (104) extends below the cup portion (102), and the cup portion (102) has a plurality of visual markings providing an accuracy of at least 1/10th of an inch of fluid accumulation. The cup and spike portions are advantageously sized and dimensioned to facilitate hand insertion of the device into the ground. To that end the overall length may advantageously be ten inches or less, more preferably eight inches or less, and still more preferably six inches or less. So that the cup portion (102) does not extend too high above the ground, it is preferred that the cup portion (102) have a length of no more than 41/2 inches. The water collection device (100) may also advantageously include a member that has a "V" or "U" shaped adaptation to receive a nail, hook, finger, or other protrusion. The adaptation facilitates hanging the device from a wall, post, etc. The visual markings preferably utilize a standard scale, such as English or metric units, and are preferably accurate to at least 1/100th of an inch and 1 mm respectively. |
