A method for desalinating a mixture of sand and salt or brackish water comprising the following steps: placing the mixture (7) in a container (1), the space between the sand grains being completely filled with water, optionally removing a layer of salt water from the top of the mixture (7), so that only a parcel of sand containing salt pore water remains behind in the container (1), introducing a layer of freshwater (9) onto the parcel of sand containing salt pore water, extracting the salt pore water close to the bottom of the parcel so that the level (8) of the salt pore water falls whilst, at the same time, fresh pore water (9) penetrates into the pores located above the abovementioned level. |
