Polyacrylonitrile is simultaneously dyed and fire-proofed by treatment with cuprous copper in aqueous solution so as to fix 0.1-3% of copper thereon and is then heated at a temperature of above 200 DEG C. in a current of air. The polymer may be a copolymer with up to 15% of methyl methacrylate and may be in the form of powder, moulded article, film, fibre, yarn, or fabric. The cuprous copper may be formed in situ by reduction. Treatment with the cuprous may be at a pH of 2-5 and a temperature of 95-130 DEG C. The heat treatment may be at 200-300 DEG C. for a period of 1 min to 12 hrs.
