PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device of a constitution suitable for use as a front projection type. SOLUTION: The projection type display device 1 comprises an illumination optical system 2A, a color separation system 4, three liquid crystal panels 5R, 5G and 5B, a light transmission system 9 which is arranged on the optical path of a luminous flux G longest in the optical path length, a dichroic prism 6 and a projection lens 7 which projects the luminous flux onto a screen 8. A case 201 on the back side of the light source 2 is internally provided with a cooling fan 21. When the device is utilized as a front projector, the cooling means exists on the side opposite to the side where an observer of projected images exist and the exhaust gas therefrom is blown to the side opposite to the observer's side. The noise of the cooling means and the exhaust gas therefrom do not therefore hinder the observer.
