Esters of 3,5 - dialkyl,- 4 - hydroxybenzyl alcohols are obtained by reacting a 2,6 - dialkylphenol with formaldehyde (or a polymer thereof) and a carboxylic acid in the presence of a secondary amine. Examples describe the reaction of 2,6 - di - t. - butylphenol with paraformaldehyde and acetic acid in the presence of diethylamine to yield 2,6 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl acetate. The products yield 1,3,5 - triallyl - 2,4,6 - tris(3,5 - dialkyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl) benzenes (cf. Specification 920,476) when reacted with 1,3,5 - trialkyl - benzenes in the presence of sulphuric acid and an inert organic solvent, and in this reaction the benzyl ester may be used as the crude reaction product or it may first be diluted with a water-immiscible organic solvent and then extracted one or more times with water. In examples, the product of the preceding examples is reacted with mesitylene to yield 1,3,5 - trimethyl - 2,4,6 - tris(3,5 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl) benzene. |
