PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a nematic liq. crystal compsn. which has a wide driving temp. range and an excellent responsivity by incorporating a liq. crystal component having a linear alkenyl group and a fluorine atom or atoms and two liq. crystal components having specified different permittivity anisotropies into the same. SOLUTION: This compsn. contains a liq. crystal component (A) comprising a compd. of the formula (R<11> is 2-10C linear alkenyl; X<11> is F, Cl, -CF3 , -OCF3 , or -CN; Y<11> and Y<12> are each H or F; and Z<11> is a single bond. -C≡C-, or -COO-)(pref. in an amt. of 1-50 wt.%). 0-70 wt.% liq. crystal component (B) comprising a compd. having a permittivity anisotropy of -2 to +2, and 0-95 wt.% liq. crystal component (C) comprising a compd. having a permittivity anisotropy of +2 or higher, the sum of components B and C being 0-99 wt.%. Pref., component A contains a compd. wherein R<11> in the formula is butenyl and/or a compd. wherein X<11> is F and/or a compd. wherein Y<11> and Y<12> are both F, in an amt. of 30-100 wt.%.
