The procedure, for use with top grade oak or sapwood that is preferably completely dry, consists of stacking the timber in a kiln either on laths or wood upon wood, and subjecting it to steam treatment, preferably at 92 - 100 deg C, for 7 - 10 days at normal atmospheric pressure. Prior to treatment, the ends of the timber lengths can be sealed. After the steam treatment the timber is cooled. The steam treatment is applied progressively to avoid using steam that is too dry or too hot, and prior to treatment the ends of the timber lengths can be sealed, e.g. with bitumen paint or polymer varnish, to reduce or stop moisture exchange. After the steam treatment the timber is cooled by agitating the air circulating through the kiln for at least 24 hours, or by spraying it with cold water.
|
