The invention relates to a switch that limits the starting current and that is configured as a pushbutton. Said switch has two contacts of a main switch and two contacts of a bypass switch, the latter two contacts being connected to a series resistor. The slide of the pushbutton switch is provided with a control cam, for example a cardioid, that maintains the pushbutton in the pressed-down position and releases it once the pushbutton is pressed again so that the slide can return to its initial position by the action of a spring. The slide has two catches, namely a first catch for closing the main switch and a second catch for opening the bypass switch, said latter catch also being used to restore the contacts of the main switch to the initial position during the return movement of the pushbutton. The main switch is configured as a snap-action switch that snaps into one of its stable positions (ON position or OFF position) after passing an unstable middle position. The system is designed such that during the switch-on movement the bypass switch remains open until the motor connected to it has run up to such a speed that the series resistor can be inactivated by short-circuiting it. The main switch and the bypass switch are mounted in series between the input terminal and the output terminal of the switch that are located in the motor circuit.
