PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject method and arrangement intended for biologically and physicochemically treating wastewater containing both ammonia and phosphorus and also recovering both the ammonia and phosphorus thus removed as useful resources. SOLUTION: This method comprises the steps wherein in a 1st phosphorus-removing means 2, a magnesium salt is added to wastewater containing both ammonia and phosphorus to separate and collect the phosphorus and part of the ammonia in a liquid phase in the form of magnesium phosphate; secondly, in a 1st nitrification means 6, the resultant wastewater is contacted with a microorganismal colony in an aerobic condition to oxidize about half of the ammonia in the liquid phase into nitrous acid; subsequently, in an ammonia oxidation means 7, the resultant wastewater is contacted with a microorganismal colony in an anaerobic condition to convert the remaining ammonia and the nitrous acid in the liquid phase to molecular nitrogen, which is expelled out of the system; wherein the ammonia oxidation means 7 is equipped with 2nd and 3rd nitrification means 13, 14 and a 2nd phosphorus-removing means 15 involving aluminum sulfate-deposited activated alumina to intend denitrification efficiency improvement and advanced phosphorus treatment.
