In a hydrocarbon synthesis process comprising contacting synthesis gas with a catalyst slurry in a reactor, separating the reactor effluent slurry into at least one liquid hydrocarbon fraction and a concentrated catalyst slurry and recycling the concentrated catalyst slurry to the reactor, the pressure drop between the reactor effluent outlet and the catalyst recycle inlet is divided into several smaller pressure drops. An Independent claim is also included for an installation for Fischer-Tropsch hydrocarbon synthesis comprising: a reactor (R) with a catalyst slurry inlet, a synthesis gas inlet, an off-gas outlet and an effluent slurry outlet; a separation zone (S2) in which the reactor effluent slurry is separated into a liquid product fraction and a concentrated catalyst slurry; a recycle line (9) for returning the concentrated catalyst slurry to the reactor; and a zone (E) that is located between the effluent slurry outlet and the catalyst slurry inlet and comprises means for dividing the pressure drop between its inlet and outlet into several smaller pressure drops.
