PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminating optical system where a dark line on a screen is made less noticeable and a polarization/conversion element is easily worked. SOLUTION: As for the row directions of 1st and 2nd lens arrays 3 and 4, all the rows are positioned so as to be different from each other. Besides, in the 1st and 2nd lens arrays 3 and 4, the dark line on the screen generated by the gap of the center axis part of a cross-dichroic prism is eliminated by the arrangement. Besides, the polarization/conversion element 20 is arranged so that the height direction (horizontal direction shown in figure) of each parallel square pole can be parallel to the deviated row directions of the 1st and 2nd lens arrays 3 and 4.
