The invention relates to an instrument for medical purposes. Said instrument comprises a housing (8) that can be introduced into an animal or human body and an electromagnetic or acoustic transducer unit (7) that is mounted in and movably received by said housing (8), preferably at the distal end thereof. Said transducer unit generates electromagnetic or acoustic waves, especially ultrasonic waves. The instrument further comprises a drive (1, 2) that drives the transducer unit (7). Said transducer unit (7) is connected to at least one first contact element (9a). At least one second contact element (8a, 8b; 12a to 12j) is located on the housing (8) to glidingly contact the first contact element (9a). The first and the second contact elements (9a and 8a, 8b; 12a to 12j) interact to provide a radial support for the transducer unit (7).
