PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a constituent comprising a specific organosilicon compound, useful as an olefin polymerization catalyst and enabling the molecular weight distribution of an obtained polymer to be easily modified. SOLUTION: This constituent comprises an organosilicon compound expressed by the formula [wherein (n) is 1 or 2; R1 to R6 are each H, a halogen or a hydrocarbon and; R7 is a hydrocarbon], e.g. a di(substituted) cyclobutyldimethoxysilane or the like. When the objective constituent is applied to anα-olefin polymerization catalyst, it is obtained by contacting (A) a solid catalyst constituent containing a magnesium atom, a titanium atom, a halogen atom and an electron-donating compound and (B) an organoaluminum compound with (C) the above organosilicon compound. The constituent A is preferably obtained e.g. by reducing a titanium compound expressed by the formula Ti(OR8)aX4-1 a [wherein R8 is a 1-20C hydrocarbon; X is a halogen and; 0<(a)<=4] in the presence of an organosilicon compound having at least one Si-O bond.
