PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve monitor efficiency by recording image data photographed by a plurality of cameras and compressed and retrieving the data at a high speed. SOLUTION: The system consists of a plurality of monitor cameras 1-1-1-14, servers S1-S5 installed in a monitor room, and a network N1 interconnecting the cameras 1-1-1-14 and the servers S1-S5, video information photographed by the cameras 1-1-1-14 is converted into digital data and the data are compressed into video data, which are recorded/reproduced by HDDs 6-1-6-5, transferred and recorded by DVD-RAM libraries 9-1-9-5. The video data stored in the DVD-RAM libraries 9-1-9-5 are retrieved by a retrieval personal computer MPC or the like connected via a network N2 and the retrieval result is displayed on a monitor M2 at a high speed.
