PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an element having high electron discharge efficiency and stable electron emitting characteristic which can be kept over a long time. SOLUTION: Conductive thin films 4a, 4b with electron emitting parts 5 are formed between a pair of element electrodes provided on a side surface of a substrate 1 which is erected perpendicularly. The parts 5 consists of deposited materials 21a, 21b containing a pair of carbons positioned higher than surfaces of the films 4a, 4b, when the side surface of the substrate 1 serves as a reference surface.
