PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information recording and reproducing device capable of discriminating plural types of recording media including a recording medium of high-density and capacity by a simple method. SOLUTION: This information recording and reproducing device records and reproduces information on plural types of disks including a disk of high- density and capacity. In this case, this device comprises an optical head 3 which records and reproduces information according to tracks provided in a spiral or concentric circular form on a disk, a track count means 11 to count track error signals generated when the tracks are crossed so that this optical head 3 makes an access to a target position on the disk, and an identification means 12 to identify the type of the disk based on the result of the track counted by the track count means 11.
