The other object carries a CCD sensor (3), on which an image of at least one code field illuminated by a laser diode is formed. A microprocessor determines the exact center position of the code field to the first CCD sensor pixel from the sensor output and adds a calibrated value arising from the code content of the measured code field and represents the distance of the code field to the start of the entire measurement section.
