A tamping device, used to produce coal cake for coking, consisting of tamping rod locking elements (15) acting upon the dual rollers (2 and 7) for guiding and optionally locking the connecting element (15) of the tamping rods (1). Locking rollers (2) and guide rollers (7) are arranged in pairs in an opposite position to said connecting element in such a way that the guide rollers (7) remain in permanent contact with the connecting element (15) of the tamper, while the locking rollers (2) are only used to lock the tamping rods (1). Said rollers are displaced in the direction of the tamping rod axis and rest upon the friction linings (8) in an elastic manner in order to prevent the tamping rods (1) from falling.
