In system and method for a payout from a gaming machine (14) including a hopper (16) for dispensing tokens, a cassette (18) containing the tokens (12), and software for controlling operations. The cassette and hopper are located in the gaming machine in plain view of a player, and are locked. Each token is transported through a path (42) by the cassette and the hopper which interact to dispense a token. A plurality of sensors (74, 76, 78, 80) sense the transport to the token through the path, the operation of the transport mechanism, and the status of the token supply. An escrow area is provided in the cassette for rejected paper tokens, as sensed by the sensors and diverted into escrow. A memory element (94) in the cassette stores operational information regarding dispensing of the tokens. A communicating device (96) in the gaming machine sends messages to a central monitoring system regarding gaming operations.
