The system (A) draws exhaust gas from the combined exhaust stream (26), from all cylinders, passes the gas through coolers (31,32) and feeds it into the inlet tract, either into the manifold branch (17) of a single cylinder (5), downstream of a throttle butterfly (21) in that branch, or into the common induction tract (18), downstream of the main throttle valve (19). Alternatively (B), exhaust gas can be drawn off from the exhaust manifold branch (22) of an individually throttled cylinder (22), cooled, and fed into the inlet tract, either into the manifold branch (14) of a single cylinder (2), downstream of a throttle butterfly (20) in that branch, or into the common induction tract, downstream of the main throttle valve. The quantity of exhaust gas recirculated is controlled by valves (28,29,30,34,35,36). |
