Unsaturated mononitriles are prepared by reacting an olefin with hydrogen cyanide and oxygen under superatmospheric pressure and in the presence of metallic Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir or Pt as catalyst. It is preferred to operate at 10-120 DEG C. under 5-150 atmospheres pressure. The catalyst may be supported on an inert carrier and may include an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cyanide as an auxiliary catalyst. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butylene and pentene. Examples relate to the preparation of acrylonitrile. |
