The material made of carbon-carbon composite comprises a fibrous substrate based on carbon fibres acting as reinforcement and a carbon matrix comprising pyrocarbon, and is characterised in that a) the said fibrous substrate has a coarse structure b) the said matrix comprises carbonaceous layers for coating the said fibrous substrate with pyrocarbon and a carbonaceous cell structure. The process comprises a stage of formation of a carbonaceous cell structure. Application to the manufacture of friction material.
