PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for readily producing N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone without lowering quality, yield and producing efficiency of a product by reducing an amount of water introduced into the reaction system. SOLUTION: In a method for producing N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone by reactingγ-butyrolactone with monomethylamine in an excessive reaction amount, the reaction is performed by setting a molar ratio of monomethylamine toγ- butyrolactone 1.03-1.50 and existing water in an amount of 1.0-2.9 times mol toγ-butyrolactone at 250-300 deg.C.
