PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composite material excellent in mechanical characteristics, toughness and heat resistance, having a composition distribution of a specific nitrogen ratio, comprising inorganic fibers consisting of a prescribed inner layer part and a surface layer part and a ceramic as a matrix. SOLUTION: This inorganic fiber-reinforced ceramic composite material comprises silicon carbide-based inorganic fibers which are composed of an inner layer part consisting of silicon, carbon, titanium and oxygen and a surface layer composed of silicon, carbon, titanium, nitrogen and oxygen in which the surface layer part formed in a zone <=500nm from the surface has a composition distribution having an inclined nitrogen ratio continuously increasing toward the surface of the fibers and a ceramic as a matrix. The ratio of the constituent elements in the inner layer part is generally 40-60% of silicon, 20-40% of carbon, 0.1-10% of titanium, 2-30% of oxygen and that of the constituent elements in the surface layer part is generally 30-60% of silicon, 15-35% of carbon, 2-30% of titanium, 5-20% of nitrogen and 2-30% of oxygen. |
