New benzenesulphonylurea derivs. are of formula (I) and their physiologically tolerable salts: In (I) R1 is 3-8C alkyl 5-9C cycloalkyl, phenyl (opt. mono- or disubstd. by 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or halogen or phenyl-(1-3C alkyl) (opt. mono- or disubstd. in the phenyl ring by 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or halogen); X is 1-2C alkyl, 1-2C alkoxy or halogen; X1 is 1-4C alkyl or 1-2C alkoxy); Y is 2-3C alkylene; and R is 1-6C alkyl, 5-9C cycloalkyl, alkylcycloalkyl, cycloalkyl-alkyl, cycloalkenyl or alkylcycloalkenyl, alkylcyclopentylmethyl, cyclohexenylmethyl, chlorocyclohexyl, bicycloheptenylmethyl, bicycloheptylmethyl, bicycloheptenyl, bicycloheptyl, nortricyclyl, adamantyl or benzyl. (I) have strong and long-lasting hypoglycaemic activity and (opt. in combination with other antidiabetic agents) can be used in the treatment off diabetes mellitus.
