The system uses bar codes to prevent errors occurring. Firstly bar codes are fixed to the charging arm at the storage depots where fuel (leaded, unleaded, diesel) is loaded. Matching bar codes are attached to the charging and discharging gates of the tanker's separate fuel compartments and thirdly bar codes are fixed close to the loading mouths of the service station storage tanks. An optical reader is carried by the tanker for reading bar code labels and is used to read the bar codes of appropriate tanks prior to filling the tanker or discharging the tanker at the service station and in this way a potential mismatch of fuel types is notified by an audible and or visual alarm.
