PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymeric optical material improved in heat resistance, transparency, the easiness of control of a refractive index, hardness, etc., by dissolving a trifunctional starting halosilane material and a bifunctional starting halosilane material in an aprotic solvent, adding water to the solution and isolating the formed low-molecular-weight hydrolyzate. SOLUTION: A trifunctional starting halosilane material and 3-45wt.% bifunctional starting halosilane material are dissolved in an aprotic solvent. Water is added to the resulting solution, and the formed low-molecular-weight hydrolyzate is isolated to obtain a polymeric optical material comprising a copolymer comprising repeating units represented by formulas I and II (wherein Z is phenyl or deuterated phenyl; and R is methyl or ethyl) and having a weight- average molecular weight o 3 x 10 or below. |
