The invention relates to a method and a device for supplying material to growth present on a surface. Detection means are used for establishing the presence or absence of the growth, which detection means are moved over the surface and which activate a supply element for supplying material to the growth upon detecting growth. The surface is thereby illuminated by means of a light source, which is moved over the surface. Detection means moving over said surface along with the light source detect infrared radiation and generate a signal for activating the supply element when a predetermined threshold value of the detected infrared radiation is exceeded.
