The invention concerns a toothbrush with a bristle head or accessory unit which compensates for the brushing pressure and associated bending of the holder unit as well as the hand movements. The toothbrush is characterised in that an O-ring (16) or elastic shoe (27) that is made either detached from or connected to the adjacent components is provided between the replaceable or fixed bristle unit (12, 22) (that can also act as a carrier for an active substance) and the holder unit (11; 21); the O-ring or elastic shoe helps to ensure a good outer seal and lies in an annular groove (11a, 12a) or in a space which elastically fills out the intermediate space between the holder (11, 21) and bristle unit (12, 22) or an accessory unit (62), and permits a pivoting and compensating movement defined by the configuration of the globe joint (12c, 22c) which in turn equalises the brushing pressure on the surface of the teeth.
