PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a rotary input device for control, with which the sound volume control function of a speaker is controlled, also as an input device for control for successively displaying plural Chinese character (KANJI) candidates on a display part. SOLUTION: Concerning the input device for control which is formed in the shape of disk and fitted into the main body of a portable telephone set in the state of exposing an arcuate section at one part outside the main body of the portable telephone set, an input device for control switching control part 8 controls the input device for control so as to ordinarily operate it as a device for controlling the sound volume control of the speaker and controls this input device for control so as to operate it at the time of Japanese syllabary (KANA) input mode as a device for scrolling KANJI as plural candidates provided by a KANA/KANJI converting part 3 in the case of retrieving any target KANJI out of these KANJIs. An input device for control rotating state detection part 6 detects the rotating state of the input device for control and outputs data showing the rotating state to a sound volume adjustment control part 7 and the KANA/KANJI converting part 3. A KANA input mode detection part 5 detects the KANA input mode from the depressing conditions of keys.
