A method of operating a urinal with the aim of cutting down on flushing water provides that the flushing cycle is initiated in a first method step, via a proximity sensor (11), in the presence of a user, and flushing is carried out for a predetermined period of time in a second method step. In order to render the control system of the urinal an intelligent system, the invention provides that, before initiating the first method step of the control system, a fixed quantity (30) of consumption water is allocated for a specific unit of time, and that, in a second method step, the quantity of flushing water discharged per flushing cycle (1-8) is measured such that the fixed quantity (30) of consumption water predetermined for the specific unit of time is not exceeded.
