Making an electron-emitting barium hafnate material comprises: (a) forming a mixt. of BaCO3 and HfO2 in a 48:52 mole ratio; (b) adding the mixt. to a carrier to form a slurry; (c) ball milling the slurry for 2 hrs. to form a powder mix; (d) drying the powder mix; (e) firing the dried powder mix in air at 1500[deg]C for 22 hrs. to produce a prod.; and (f) vibration milling the prod. in methanol with ZrO2 media to produce the barium hafnate. Also claimed is a high pressure arc discharge tube having a main electrode at each end and contg. a fill of an arc-generating and sustaining medium, where each electrode is coated with the electron-emitting barium hafnate material.
