A surface material (2) for absorbent hygiene articles such as nappies, sanitary towels or incontinence pads, comprises a layer of hydrophobic material containing a pattern of inwards pointing cavities (4) arranged in parallel rows across the width of the material, which extend in the material length direction. The cavities are provided with holes (5) oriented in the width direction, which lead to the inside surface of the surface material. The areas in between or outside the rows of cavities are provided with outwards pointing ridges (6) having round tips. The machinery for making this surface material is also claimed, comprising a counter-roll with rows of cog-like profiles extending around its surface, a cutting device for making length direction incisions in a web of material supported by the roll and a press roll positioned downstream of the cutting device with circumferential direction ribs that press into the gaps between the cogs. The counter-roll also has inwards facing grooves extending in the circumferential direction between the rows of cogs that engage with the ribs on the press roll. |
