The mechanism (1) has at least one main frame (4) and a folding arrangement (6,8,11,13). This may consist of a transverse folder (8,11,13) with a working runner (14-16) for sheet layer (20) folding, carrying out a working motion and determining a working position. The mechanism comprises at least one adjuster for adapting it for selective formation of different number of folds in each sheet layer. Pref. the folding tool, or working runner (12,18), together with its bearing, is adjustable such that each runner is adjustable across its rotation axis (35).
