PURPOSE: To sense the internal stress of a feed roller positioned in a roll supporting part by measuring the bearing stress of feed roll borne by support arms. CONSTITUTION: Between strain gauges the voltage difference is measured from deformation of strain gauges corresponding to the rotational angular position at each time of support arms 8, 10 by a bridge circuit, and the obtained value is amplified and subjected to evaluation. The evaluation enables calculation of the weight at the current time of a feed roll where the angular positions of the arms 8, 10 are taken into consideration. Therein the arms 8, 10 and other support arms 7, 9 are calibrated in accordance with their rotational angular positions. The weight of a sleeve 17 accommodating a band material is also known, and the width data of the band material and the comparing data are entered in a computer, and it is possible to determine the mean length of band the feed roll 19 and the remaining amount of roll. The bearing stress P of the roll 19 borne in the roll supporting parts 4, 6 is measured in the condition that the feed roll 19 is at a standstill.
