<p>Quaternary phosphonium cmpds. R' and R2 = H, opt. subst. and opt. unsatd. alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aralkyl, opt. subst. aryl, or (R' only) a phosphonium residue R3-R5 = alkyl or aryl opt. subst. by alkyl or alkoxy R6 = H, acyl, or a dialkylaluminium hydride residue resulting from the redn. of a ketone, aldehyde, acid or ester, with a dialkyl- (pref. di-isobutyl) aluminium hydride A- an electron acceptor e.g. BF3. Intermediates for vitamin A and carotenoids. BF3-Et2O (3.5 ml.), was added to vitamin A (7.1 g.) and Ph3P (6.55 g.) in PhH (200 ml.), and stirred 2 h. at 20 deg., giving the BF3 adduct of axerophthylidenetriphenylphosphonium hydroxide, which was characterised by I.R. and U.V. spectra.</p> |
