PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display device of an optically active color display capable of maintaining a high contrast ratio even if the respective pixels of a display screen vary in colors. CONSTITUTION:Transparent substrates 2a, 2b consisting of two sheets of glass, etc., are arranged in parallel and the opposite surfaces of these transparent substrates 2a, 2b are provided thereon with transparent pixel electrodes 4a, 4b respectively consisting of ITO, etc. The pixel electrodes 4a on one side are provided thereon with fine color filters 5a, 5b exhibiting various colors, such as, for example, R, G, B, in a matrix form in correspondence to the respective pixels. The thickness of the color filters 5a, 5b and the thickness (the spacing between the transparent substrates 2a and 2b) of the liquid crystal layer 6 are so set that the retardation (DELTAn.d) of the liquid crystal layer 6 of the respective color filters 5a, 5b corresponds to 0.4 to 0.6mum or 0.8 to 1.2mum. |
