A control device (3) brings the larger number of pole pairs into effect at an instant at which it is ensured that the braking of the turret head (1) to the indexing speed (ni) is ended before the turret head (1) is held in place by the preindexing pin (4). Bearing surfaces are allocated to both a locking member (19) for locking the turret head (1) and an annular surface (17) of the turret housing (25) with which the locking member (19) interacts. The bearing surfaces each lie in a plane to which the axis of rotation of the turret head (1) runs perpendicularly and eliminate engagement of the teeth of the locking member (19) in the tooth gaps of the annular surface (17) of the turret housing (25) in all angular positions of the turret head (1) other than the selectable angular positions by bearing against one another. <IMAGE>
