Appts. for plugging or repairing the tubes (4) of a steam generator comprises a laser welding tool (5), supported on a pivotable arm inside the lower plenum of the generator below tube plate (3) and supplied with power through an optical fibre (8), which is fed forwards and backwards, in response to movement of tool (5) into line with and vertically inside different tubes (4), by a unit (15) which supports the fibre (8) between rollers. Unit (15) is supported on a carriage (19) movably along a curved rail (20) in the space between the generator casing (2) and the flat floor (11) of an enclosing concrete housing (10). Carriage (19) is moved to different position along rail (20) according to which tube (4) the tool (5) is working on, to minimise bending of fibre (8). USE/ADVANTAGE - Working on the tubes of the steam generator of a pressurised water nuclear reactor. Moving carriage (19) provides extra flexibility of movement to minimise bending and possible damage to optical fibre (8).
