The building roof joint is designed to be watertight and to avoid rubbing due to thermal expansion and contraction, which might lead to fretting corrosion. The edges of the metal roof plates (1,3) are shaped to form upstanding ridges, (5) with one plate folded over the other. The outer plate (1,4) has grooves (6) outside where it is deformed inwards near the top of the ridge. Inside this top portion there is an inverted channel section batten, and the shaped end of the inner plate (7,17,18) extends inside it. Balls (9) are retained between the batten and the edge of the plate to give to give rolling rather than rubbing motion.
