PURPOSE:To obtain a high-quality image display by providing a light shielding layer covering the boundary regions between color filters on the outer surface of a substrate on a counter electrode side, thereby preventing the unequal orientation of a liquid crystal and imparting an optimum orientability to the liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal 6 is clamped between the substrate 8 provided with picture element electrodes 7 and the substrate 1 provided with a counter electrode 5 and the plural color filters 3. The light shielding layer 2 covering the boundary regions between the color filters 3 is provided on the outer side of the substrate 1 on the counter electrode 5 side, i.e., on the side opposite from the liquid crystal 6. An insulating layer 4 consisting of SiO2, etc., is filled in the boundary regions between the adjacent color filters 3 to flatten the surface. Then, level differences are not generated even if the color filters 3 and the light shielding layer 2 are overlapped indirectly and, therefore, the orientability of the liquid crystal 6 is maintained optimum. Alignment is facilitated by providing marks in the peripheral part at the time of forming the light shielding layer 2. |
