The invention relates to novel antioxidants, i.e. the [R] or [S] compounds shown by the wavy line in formula I, <IMAGE> in which R<1> together with R<2> represent the radical -S(O)- and R<3> and R<4> represent hydrogen, or else R<3> together with R<4> represent the radical -S(O)- and R<1> and R<2> represent hydrogen. In particular, the formula I is intended to comprise: 5,6-sulphinyl-D-or L-gulono- gamma -lactone, 5,6-sulphinyl-D-or L-mannono- gamma -lactone, 2,3-sulphinyl-L-gulono- gamma -lactone, and 2,3-sulphinyl-D-mannono- gamma -lactone. |
